Asian Rhinoplasty (Higher Nose Bridge)

What is Asian Rhinoplasty?

Asian Rhinoplasty, Asian Nose Surgery, St Paul MN, Woodbury MNRhinoplasty is a medical term for surgery of the nose. The procedure, if done correctly, can improve the appearance and proportion of the nose as well as enhance self-confidence.

For Asians, rhinoplasty or nose reshaping is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures next to double eyelid surgery. Before exploring options to enhance the Asian nose, let us understand the anatomy of the typical Asian nose. The Asian nose differs from a Caucasian nose. Asians generally have a flatter nose bridge and wider nostrils than their Caucasian counterparts. The skin of the Asian nose is much thicker as well. These features are evident among all groups in Asia and especially more prominent in Southeast Asians. Therefore, the goal of Asian rhinoplasty is to augment the nose to be more prominent with a higher bridge and sharper tip that is in proportion to the face. This is in contrast to a traditional or typical Caucasian rhinoplasty of making the nose smaller.

When operating on Asian noses, it is important to seek a skilled plastic surgeon that understands the Asian nose and its anatomy. An experience surgeon will take care to ensure the end result and avoid using Caucasian rhinoplasty techniques on Asian noses. The use of inappropriate rhinoplasty techniques on Asian noses could lead to an over-sized bridge, inappropriate material for nasal bridge, wrong tip shape, unnecessary narrowing of the nostril, and implant extrusion where the implant in place is too big causing great pressure on the overlying skin of the nose. The ideal result of a successful Asian rhinoplasty should be subtle and proportionate to only enhance the individual’s ethnic identity rather than change it.

Your Nose Surgery
The technique used for your surgery depends upon the results you desire. Dr. Thao will work with you to help you discover your possibilities. The procedure is done in the office or on an out patient basis under local or general anesthesia and usually takes between 1-2 hours. Initial discomfort is easily controlled with oral medication. Also, initial bruising and swelling may last 2-4 weeks and is controlled by placing cold compress on the nasal bridge for the first week. Once the bruising and swelling goes down, your final result will begin to be noticeable.

These additional cosmetic surgery procedures may help enhance your results: Juvederm, Radiesse, Botox and Laser Skin Rejuvenation.
